Environmental and Conservation Seed Committee sets agenda for Kansas City
The American Seed Trade Association’s Farm & Lawn Seed Conference, held in conjunction with the Western Seed Association’s Annual Meeting, will be Nov. 6-9 in Kansas City, Mo. As a part of the conference, ASTA’s Environmental and Conservation Seed Committee will meet Nov. 7 from 2-5 p.m. A number of speakers who will provide key updates on a variety of topics have been confirmed.
Dr. Ken Vogel, a research geneticist specializing in forage breeding with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service, will discuss research on native seed, seed for biofuels and invasions while emphasizing scientific justification on native seed selection and its utility.Tony Claxton, Missouri’s seed control official, will share his thoughts about the Association of American Seed Control Officials’ regulatory practices and enforcement regarding native seeds.
Another session, presented by Anita Hall, will hone in on transparency in seed testing and procedures, TZ testing and the importance of standardization in testing, and needs of buyers and sellers of native seed. Hall, executive assistant for the Association of Official Seed Analysts, will also lead a discussion seeking ideas and ways they can enhance their efforts to provide support for seed companies and customers dependent on seed testing.
In addition, Chet Boruff, Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies chief executive officer, will talk about their work with the Bureau of Land Management, source ID, yellow tags, processes and standards, and discuss ways to increase and improve collaboration and information exchange.

Update on AOSA Rules / Addition of the PCR Method for Testing Ryegrass
by Anita Hall, Association of Official Seed Analysts
It has been known for years that fluorescence is not genetically linked to annuality in ryegrass, therefore the seedling root fluorescence test does not always accurately reflect the purity of ryegrass seed lots. This false-positive bias has been costly to grass seed growers who receive lowered seed payments and costly to seed companies because of inappropriately labeled seed being sold to the consumer.
Tall Fescue Blowing Point Test Panel Discussion
Adriel Garay, Oregon State University Seed Lab
Sharon Davidson, Agri-Seed Testing
Anita Hall, Association of Official Seed Analysts
A method has been offered to add a procedure in the AOSA Rules for Testing Seeds for using air velocity calibration for tall fescue sampling. This point/counter-point discussion will focus on the latest proposal, which resulted in a survey of practicality and acknowledgement to the labs. The survey results will be presented during this session, as well.
