Canada Weed Seeds Order 2005
A recent World Trade Organization notification announced that the
Canada Weed Seeds Order 2005 has come into force on July 1 2005.
The Canada Weed Seeds Order designates species of plants that are
deemed to be weed seeds for the purpose of establishing 6 classes
of weeds. This classification is according to the seriousness of
the effect they may have on agricultural production systems if found

USDA Grants Protection to Twenty-Five New Plant Varieties
WASHINGTON, July 21, 2005 The U.S. Department of Agriculture
has issued certificates of protection to developers of twenty-five
new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They
include bluegrass, celery, cotton, lettuce, peanut, ryegrass, and
soybean. The twenty-five certificates are being issued under the
Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the
varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will
have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their
products in the United States for the duration of protection. The
twenty-five certificates are:
- the Blue Knight variety of Kentucky bluegrass, developed by
Fred B. Ledeboer, Aurora, OR;
- the Cabernet variety of Kentucky bluegrass, developed by Lebanon
Seaboard Corporation, Huntsville, UT;
- the Bordeaux variety of Kentucky bluegrass, developed by Lebanon
Seaboard Corporation and Rutgers, The State University of New
Jersey, Huntsville, UT;
- the Command variety of celery, developed by Pybas Vegetable
Seed Co., Inc., Santa Maria, CA;
- the PM 2168 RR, DP 455 BG/RR, and DP 543 BGII/RR varieties of
cotton, developed by D&PL Technology Holding Company, LLC., Scott,
MS;
- the Siskiyou variety of lettuce, developed by Seminis Vegetable
Seeds, Inc., Oxnard, CA;
- the Durango variety of lettuce, developed by Enza Zaden Beheer
B.V., Enkhuizen, The Netherlands:
- the Georgia-01R* variety of peanut, developed by University
of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc., Athens, GA;
- the All*StarÓ and Gator 3 varieties of perennial ryegrass, developed
by DLF International Seeds and Rutgers, The State University of
New Jersey, Halsey, OR;
- the Pembina* and ProSoy* varieties of soybean, developed by
NDSU Research Foundation, Fargo, ND; and
- the 90M91, 91M70, 92M01, 91M12, 91M60, 91M13, 90M01, 90M40,
90M61, 91M91 and 92M61 varieties of soybean, developed by Pioneer
Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, IA.
In the United States, seed of this variety (1) shall be sold by
variety name only as a class of certified seed and (2) shall conform
to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights
(84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ). USDA's Agricultural
Marketing Service administers the Plant Variety Protection Act,
which provides time- limited marketing protection to developers
of new and distinct seed- reproduced and tuber-propagated plants
ranging from farm crops to flowers. For additional information contact

Soybean Rust Reports from U.S. Land Grant Universities now available
on www.soyrap.com
The American Soybean Association (ASA) and Doane Agricultural Services
Company announced July 25, 2005 that updates from Asian soybean
rust extension specialists affiliated with the Land Grant Universities
are now available on the Soybean Rust Advisory Program (SoyRAP)
website. Launched in May by ASA and Doane, www.SoyRAP.com
is a valuable online resource containing advice from leading experts
about combating soybean rust, rust's impact on the soybean markets
and news updates as they occur. Full

New England Invasive Plant Summit
The New England Invasive Plant Summit will be held September 16-17,
2005 at Sheraton Framingham Hotel, Framingham, MA. Gather with scientists,
land managers, policy-makers, educators, horticulturists, industry
leaders and volunteers who are seeking and sharing information about
how to work together to find solutions to the invasive plant problem
in the region.
The preliminary agenda and registration information are now available
online. Also available are instructions for submitting an abstract
for a presentation or poster. The deadline for submitting an abstract
has been extended to June 8, 2005. A limited number of Student Scholarships

Soybean Rust Workshop
The American Phyto-Pathological Society has scheduled a workshop
in conjunction with USDA and the American Soybean Board for November
15-16, 2005 to discuss soybean rust. The symposium will be held
at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville, TN. Check out the APS web
